Almost every leader I have worked with has looked at their hardworking team and wondered, “Why aren’t we further along?”
This week I explore one of the most common execution challenges inside growing organizations - the gap between effort and progress. I discuss how alignment and not activity is often the missing ingredient and what you as a leader can do to help your team focus on the work that matters.

Trail Map - Learn. Think. Act.™
📚Learn
Being busy is not the same as being aligned. Many teams work incredibly hard but still fail to make meaningful progress because effort alone doesn’t guarantee results. Before focusing on doing more, make sure you’re doing the right things in the right order.
Define the goal clearly. Everyone should know exactly what success looks like.
Align on the strategy. How will you get from where you are today to where you want to be?
Evaluate the work. Every task should support the strategy and move the team closer to the goal.
Learn to say no. If a task doesn’t align with the objective, question whether it deserves your time and attention.
🤔Think
Is my team focused on meaningful progress or are they just staying busy?
Can every major task be connected directly to our strategy and goals?
What work am I continuing to do simply because it’s familiar, not because it’s effective?
💪Act
This week, create a simple alignment check::
Write down your primary goal
List the strategy you’re using to achieve it
Review your current tasks.
Remove, delegate, or question any work that doesn’t clearly support the strategy.
Remember: Hard work alone doesn’t create results. Hard work applied to the right priorities does.
