You can always feel it in a meeting.
The moment someone checks their phone.
The crossed arms.
The forced smile.
The “I’m listening” nod while they’re clearly somewhere else mentally.
Nobody says anything about it, but everyone notices. And leaders underestimate how much their presence shapes the room before they ever say a word.

Trail Map - Learn. Think. Act.™
📚Learn
Communication is more than words.
Research often suggests that a large portion of communication is nonverbal. How we look, move, react, and show emotion matters just as much as what we say.
Your eyes, posture, facial expressions, tone and energy all send signals:
Leaning in shows engagement
Smiling creates warmth
Eye contact builds trust
Crossed arms can create distance
Looking at your phone can signal disinterest
People may forget your exact words, but they will remember how you made them feel. That’s why great communicators focus on both the message and the experience.
🤔Think
What are you communicating when you’re not speaking?
In meetings, on video calls, and during difficult conversations. Are your nonverbal cues supporting your message or quietly fighting against it?
Sometimes we unintentionally communicate:
Distraction
Frustration
Defensiveness
Disengagement
Strong communicators also pay attention to what others are signaling. Communication improves when we learn to notice both sides of the conversation.
💪Act
Pick one interaction this week and pay attention to your non-verbal communication.
Focus on:
Eye contact
Smiling naturally
Open posture
Leaning in while listening
Staying present without distractions
Then observe the other person.
Are they engaged? Hesitant? Defensive? Energized?
Small changes in body language can completely change how your message is received.
Great communication is not just about what people hear. It’s about what they feel.
